To buy or not to buy

Nate recently paid the Honda off - 2 years early I might add :) - and he's strongly considering buying his sports car, finally! For as long as I've known Nate he's been wanting to buy "his fast car" but he's always put our family/relationship first so he definitely deserves said "fast car". I want him to get it more than anything, but the hang up is he's going to leave here soon for two months then be home for about 5 and deploy again, so do we wait until after the deployment, or do we get it now so he can enjoy it,even for just 5 months, give or take?

My deal is why pay on something for 7 months when he's not going to be here when he can just buy it when he gets home since this may be his last deployment before we PCS - here's hoping! - ? He's re-enlisting this year and there may be a bonus for his job so we can always use that money to put down on a car too. I don't know I want to support him because like I said, he deserves it more than anything (even if it is a ford he wants to buy haha) but buying a car before he leaves doesn't seem like something we should do when it wont be driven. I mean I'm not going to be able to drive it, he wants to buy a manual... Maybe I can learn to drive it while he's gone! err I'm not sure he'll like that though. ;-)

What would y'all do?

one big plus!

He can change his legal residence to Texas and we'll get to put have Texas plates! We need to change the Honda too.

  1. I say wait. No need to make a car payment for it just to sit if you can wait it our for little bit.

  2. This is a hard one! I totally understand the wanting to drive it while he is home! I told Dave to buy his bike so he could use it now and really didn't think about that later. So the fun side of me say get the car now.

Now the side of me that likes being debt free says wait. If you take the money that you would be spending on the car and put it away each month until he gets back you will have a bigger down payment and you will not be paying interest on something that is not being driven everyday. Take this money plus the bonus and you should have some nice cash to put down on the Ford. (Nothing wrong with a Ford, I cried when I had to turn in my Mustang for a family car!) Also something to think about it paying the insurance for those 7 months too. If the car is financed most insurance companies make you have a bigger minimum on your car insurance. (USAA does not do this) If you just saved all this money up, buying it later will be so much easier on your check book.
I could be wrong but don't they still do the thing when you buy a car overseas and have it waiting for you when you get home its cheaper?
